FAQs
1.How do I know if a plastic surgeon is qualified to treat me and solve my problems adequately?
|
In Mexico, the best guarantee that a patient can have is that the Doctor whether he be Mexican or a foreigner is that he MUST be certified by the “ASCOCIACION MEXICANA DE CIRUGIA PLASTICA, ESTETICA, Y RECONSTRUCTIVA” ( Mexican Association of Plastic, Esthetic and Reconstructive Surgery).
That’s the only thing that backs that the surgeon received the proper training to solve the problems related to the Specialty, more so this association requires that all it’s members RECERTIFY every 5 years. In order to re-certify they have to update themselves through courses, workshops, the publication of articles or the teaching of certain subjects related to their specialty. To that one must add the experience of the surgeon.
2.What difference is there between plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery?
Plastic Surgery is an artistic science that tries to correct or improve the normal structures of the body, improving the appearance of the patient and through that improving their self-esteem. We achieve the result as esthetically as possible through surgery of the bodies contour by performing liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tucks, as well as facial and eye surgeries.
3.What personal information does the doctor need and why?
It’s very important that the patient mention to the surgeon any family history of illness; such as problems with coagulation, diabetes, cardiac or nervous, as well as allergies to any medications or food, also any illness or treatments they are on at the moment, any recent traumatic injuries or surgeries etc. All surgical procedures have risks, however, they will be lessened or eliminated if the patient researches before the surgery and also the patient shouldn’t withhold any information from the surgeon, that way the surgeon can make the proper preparations.
4.How should I prepare for surgery?
Your surgeon will indicate the pre-operation lab work you need, also if you should continue with any treatments or indications that were giving in subsequent visits; including if you should or shouldn’t suspend any medication or physical activities, as well as certain eating habits or dietary supplements.
5.What results can I really expect from my surgery?
It’s extremely necessary for the surgeon to be very specific as to what the patient can expect, grounding him as to what can and can’t be achieved by the surgery both physically and emotionally. This applies specially with sever deformities that require multiple or complex interventions.
6.What risks and complications can occur during or after a surgery?
There will be less possibilities of risks or complication if the patient has less risk factors such as diabetes, heart palpitations that aren’t controlled, problems with coagulation, frequent consumption of aspirin or birth control medications or drug use. On the other hand, the surgeon must be a Board Certified Surgeon who will do an extensive interview, with a wide range of lab test and that the surgery be done in an adequate clinic that is well equipped; to further reduce risks.
7.Will I have any discomfort after the surgery?
The discomfort will be minimum in general, since one of our objectives is, not only to achieve optimum results but that the patient experience the least amount of discomfort. Some discomfort is due to the tightness
of the bandages and to the change in the daily routine.
8.How much pain will I have and will I tolerate it?
Tolerance to pain varies from person to person, however, the plastic surgeon puts great emphasis that when pain occurs it be minimal. The patient must differentiate between pain and the discomfort or intolerance to the bandages. In general, there should be no pain and the Anesthesiologist should pay close attention that the patient experience
the least amount of pain.
9.How long will it take to recover in order to return to work and to my social life?
The recovery period varies with each procedure and from patient to patient, but in general, the patient can go back to their daily routines 6 to 10 days after the surgery and the patient can wear make up 4 to 5 days after a face-lift. There will be some limitations as to athletic activities and violent exercise depending on the type of surgery.
10.When can I start exercising again?
There will be a restriction on violent exercise such as aerobics, especially after a tummy tuck or liposuction of the abdomen or the back during a period of 2 to 3 months after the surgery. In other cases such as a nose job or face-lift the restriction might be 2 or 3 weeks, on most other procedure it’s 1 week, or course that depends on the type of surgery and the patients condition.
